Opinions—
No. 1—From the low free and saline ammonia figure it would
appear that this bath had not been used much since the
water had been chlorinated, although there was no trace:
of free chlorine present on receipt of the sample. It
would be interesting to have samples of these waters
for examination at the end of a hot day, when the baths
had been used to a considerable extent, and. to have fresh
samples the next morning, as this would give a better
indication of the amount of actual purification taking
place.
No. 2— This is a clear and bright water of normal colour ancL
earthy odour. It is neutral in reaction, hard in character,
free from metals, and contained 0.2 parts per million of
free chlorine.
The water is of satisfactory organic quality and a
high degree of bacterial purity, and is suitable and safe
for swimming bath purposes.
No. 3— This is a clear and bright water of normal colour,,
faint earthy odour only, and neutral in reaction.
It contains no excess of saline or mineral matter, is
free from metals, and contained a trace of residual freechlorine,
not excessive in amount.
The water is of good organic quality, and a highstandard
of bacterial purity, and we are of opinion that
it is suitable and safe for swimming bath purposes.
No. 4— From the low free and saline ammonia figure it would
appear that this bath had not been used much since the
water had been chlorinated, although there was no trace
of free chlorine present on receipt of the sample. On the
whole the water is very satisfactory chemically, but I
should like to see the oxygen absorbed even lower, if"
possible, as this is largely due to unoxidised organic
matter.
No. 5— This is a clear and bright water of normal colour and'
faint earthy odour. The water contains no excess of
saline matter, is free from metals, and of a satisfactory
degree of organic quality.
Bacteriologically, also, it is of satisfactory quality,,
inasmuch as it contains few bacteria and the Bacillus Coli.
is absent in 50 c.c.
