The construction of the relief sewer from Hale End'
Road at the junction with Wadham Road to the Sewage
Works has been completed.
Closet Accommodation.— The number of cesspools in'
use is eight, seven of which are situated in The Avenue. It
is anticipated that a new sewer will be constructed in TheAvenue
next year, which will reduce the number of cesspoolsto
one.
Public Cleansing.— The Cleansing Superintendent, Mr..
Eric Bell, M.I.P.C., reports as follows:—
"The collection of house and trade refuse has been
carried out by means of horse-drawn vans and mechanical
vehicles; the only improvement in this service during the
year being the increased frequency of collection in certain
cases where it has been requested. The usual collection has
been weekly.
Very few requests have been received for the collection'
and destruction of bulky articles, such as bedding.
The quantity of House Refuse collected during the year
was 25,227 tons, Market Refuse amounted to 1,945 tons,
whilst refuse delivered by traders amounted to 3,152 tons.
Of the total of 30,324 tons of refuse handled, 26,501 tonswere
incinerated and 3,823 tons tipped.
Street Cleansing was carried out by means of a combination
of hand labour and mechanical methods, the area swept
during the year amounting to 259,141,560 square yards, air
increase of 86,380,520 square yards on the previous year.
Owing to a large quantity of the sweepings being used by.
allotment holders, it is impossible to obtain accurate weights
of the refuse collected, but a close estimate appears to indicate
that slightly less was collected than the previous year.
Mechanical gully cleansing was continued during the
year, and 1,648 tons of sludge were removed."
