MATERNAL MORTALITY.
There were two maternal deaths— one a booked case, the
other unbooked.
Details of Maternal Deaths.
Tit. 25 years, primipara, was admitted to the Maternity
Home in labour on account of eclampsia. The patient had one
fit before admission. Blood pressure 184/90. Cloud of'albumen.
Moderate degree of cedema. A combination of the Dublin and
Stroganoff methods was used in treatment with the addition of
intravenous calcium gluconate. A series of six fits occurred with
intervening periods of coma. Forceps were applied when the
patient was fully dilated. A living female infant was delivered.
Shortly after delivery the patient's condition improved, but
eventually became worse, coma and later collapse occurred. The
patient died ten hours after delivery.
/Et. 32 years, primipara. Private doctor's booked case.
Admitted for operation on account of fibroids of the uterus. On
admission, general condition very good, cedema of feet, urine—
no abnormal constituents, blood pressure 110/68. An operation
for Qesarean section and multiple myomectomy was performed,
a living female infant being delivered. Haemorrhage was
moderate. Following the operation the patient showed signs of
severe shock, there was no response to treatment. Death occurred
an hour and a half after the operation. This death was classified
by the Registrar General to the group "Non-malignant tumours
of female genital organs" and not to "pregnancy and childbearing"
but returned as associated therewith. The death, therefore,
is not included in the calculations of Maternal Mortality
statistics.
