Compensation for Loss of Cases.β€” During the year the
Council decided to compensate midwives by the payment of 10/per
confinement lost by reason of the reference of the patient
from the Council's Ante-Natal Clinic to hospital on account of'
any abnormality.
No claims for compensation were made during 1935.
Assistance re Midwives' Fees.β€”In order to endeavour to
eliminate the handywoman by the provision of a certified midwife
acting as a maternity nurse, the Council adopted a scale of fees
for the assessment of any application so received. The scale
adopted was similar to the one in use for the assessment of
medical aid fees under the Midwives Acts.
No applications were received during 1935.

13. PUERPERAL FEVER AND PYREXIA.
Thirty-five cases of Puerperal Fever and Pyrexia were notified
during 1935. The notifications were received from the
following sources: Maternity Home, 26; Hospitals outside the
area, 5 (in 3 of these the confinements occurred in Walthamstow)
; and General Practitioners, 4.
The puerperal fever and pyrexia rate for 1935 was 20.26
per 1,000 total births, and the mortality due to puerperal sepsis;
was 8.6 per cent. of the cases of puerperal fever and pyrexia
notified.
The Registrar-General has issued the following rates with
regard to the notification of Puerperal Fever and Pyrexia.
