The following figures show the position at the end of the
financial year, that is, 31st March, 1934:—
228 houses have been built and tenancies granted during the
year.
The whole of the cases recommended on medical grounds,
including T.B. negative cases, have been offered accommodation
on the Council's estates, and the practice has been to
avoid any suggestion of segregation. The Department has been
intensely interested in the question of rehousing tuberculous
patients and submitted a report for the consideration of the Council
with a view to rehousing all tuberculous patients, particularly
those cases where the wage earner was the patient or the income
was very low, and it was decided that the Council should approach
the County Council with a view to their giving rent relief in any
such cases.
The Slum Clearance schemes have been dealt with by the
Department and in some cases the tenants were actually rehoused
from compulsory purchase areas prior to the site being actually
purchased. All the tenants from the Billet Road compulsory purchase
area have been rehoused. In Hilton Grove there only
remain three houses to be dealt with, and these tenants are
requiring one-bedroom type accommodation only. The Council
have before them a scheme for the erection of appropriate accommodation
in order to rehouse the whole of the remaining tenants
in Hilton Grove, Spring Gardens, and Jeffrey's Square areas, and
they are negotiating with other landowners with a view to purchasing
additional land for the erection of houses under the 1930
Act, when no doubt the Markhouse Place area will also be dealt
with.
The Council's housing estates at this date (31.3.34) comprise
1,480 properties, being made up as follows:—
527 houses built under 1919 Act
912 houses built under 1924 Act Total 1,443.
4 houses built under 1930 Act
23 General Properties.
14 Shops.
The maintenance of the property under the Council's Rota
Scheme was successfully dealt with for the first time during the
year, and has been the means of reducing complaints from tenants,
the amenities of the estates being generally maintained.
The properties are situated on various estates, as follows:—
Priors Croft, 198 houses; Higham Hill and Millfield, 338 houses;
Essex Hall, 136 houses; Kimberley Road, 98 houses; Spion Kop,
260 houses; Priory, 162 houses; Highams Park, 151 houses;
Fitzwygram, 50 houses; Chestnuts, 50 houses; General Properties,
Flats and Shops, 37.
