Mrs. W. R. Thorne, L.D.S., reports as follows:—
"The number of dental cases referred from the Welfare Centres
to the clinic has been small and there are too few from which to
form any opinion of the dental condition of nursing and pregnant
mothers to which two classes of treatment are confined.
"Only by inspection of the whole group attending the Welfare
Centres could any findings relative to dental disease and general
health be arrived at. The few who find their way to the clinic
come usually as sufferers and with marked oral sepsis. If these
cases be typical there is urgent need for more treatment.
“Mothers rarely desire any treatment other than extraction and
anticipate artificial dentures as being very desirable and the cure
for all dental and many other troubles.
"Prophylactic treatment is not valued and advice on oral
hygiene rarely intelligently followed. Every mother is given the
opportunity of having complete treatment. The need for treatment
of the mother is greater than that of the toddler, who
automatically comes under routine inspection at school age.
“If there is to be any benefit to the coming race from dental
treatment of the mother, that treatment should be accorded to the
potential mother and not shelved until pregnancy or even later
until lactation."
(c) Tonsils and Adenoids.—Ten cases were operated on under
the arrangement made by the Education Committee with the
Walthamstow Dispensary and two cases at the Connaught Hospital.
(d) Ophthalmic Defects and Minor Ailments are given any
necessary treatment either at the School Clinics or by special
appointment.
