"Twenty-three highly qualified honorary Specialists are in
regular attendance and there are three Resident Medical Officers,
The Nursing Staff consists of the Matron, the Sister Tutor, 12 Sisters,
5 Staff Nurses and 30 Probationers.
"The complement of 100 beds is allocated as follows:—Medical
cases, 21; Surgical, 32; Children, 34; Private Beds, 10;
Observation Beds, 3.
"There are facilities for operative surgery, X-Ray work, dental,
ophthalmic and massage treatment. Pathological work is carried
out partly at the Hospital and partly at other Institutions.
"During 1931, 609 major, and 2,822 minor operations were
performed, a total of 3,431. 5,544 radiographs were taken, and
6,928 massage treatments were given. There were also 6,192
electrical treatments, and 3,287 artificial sunlight treatments given
during the year at Comely Bank Annexe.
“A Gynaecological Out-Patient Department will be opened early
in 1932 with Mr. Alistair Galletly, M.C., F.R.C.S., as Honorary
Surgeon-in-Charge.''
The returns of the various Hospitals show that full use was
made of the facilities available. There is no question that if more
beds were available at the Connaught Hospital and Whipps Cross
Hospital, full use could be made of the added facilities. Co-operation
exists between the Local Authority and the Connaught Hospital
chiefly in respect of the schemes for the admission of the Education
Committee's Tonsils and Adenoid cases, and the Borough Council's
Enteric Fever cases.
Future plans for the improvement of the Hospital services
include the provision of a Municipal Maternity Home and of an
additional 12 beds at the Infectious Diseases Hospital.
The Walthamstow Dispensary.
The Dispensary is a Charity founded in 1873, and which,
during 1931, gave treatment to 976 cases, who made 3,162
attendances. In addition, 285 operations for removal of Tonsils
and Adenoids were done for your Education and Maternity and Child
Welfare Committees.
8. Maternity and Nursing Homes.—The application made
by your Council some time ago to the Essex County Council, i.e.,
for the delegation of powers of administration under the Nursing
Homes Registration Act, 1927, was successful. The administration
of the Act was taken over on the 1st October on which date the
following Homes were registered:—
