In order to cope with the situation in Ilford I had to ask the Essex -County Council to remove 20 cases of tuberculosis from the beds in the Isolation Hospital which had been loaned to the Essex County Council for hat purpose.

Of the 144 persons notified as suffering from Pneumonia, 91 were admitted
to hospitals, or 63.2 per cent. (47.9 per cent. of them being admitted to the
Ilford Isolation Hospital). Of this number 13 persons died or 14.3 per
cent. The remaining 53 persons were nursed at home, and of this number
18 died or 33.9 per cent.
The above figures show the importance of having adequate Hospital
accommodation to deal with an influenza epidemic.
In addition to the cases notified as Pneumonia, 18 deaths certified as
having died from influenza occurred in patients nursed at home.
In 1918, when an epidemic of Influenza occurred, there were no fewer
than 249 deaths of Ilford residents from influenza and 55 from pneumonia.
3. Tuberculosis. During the year 1944 there were 205 new notifications
of Pulmonary Tuberculosis and 29 of other forms of Tuberculosis.
17 cases of Pulmonary and 4 cases of Non-Pulmonary Tuberculosis were
transferred to Ilford.
