With regard to the Isolation Hospital, the additional
laundry accommodation has now been completed. During
the greater part of the year a block of six beds has been
utilised for cases of Tuberculosis sent to us by the Essex
Insurance Committee.
Since February, 1913, all cases of Tuberculosis have
been notifiable to the Medical Officer of Health. This has
somewhat increased the work of the department. The
question of co-operation between the District Council and the
County Insurance Committee, in the matter of Tuberculosis,
is becoming increasingly important, and it is very necessary
that the local Tuberculosis Officer should be formally
appointed on the staff of the District Council. The work of
the School Medical Service has proceeded throughout the year
with good results. The question of appointing a School
Dentist has been under the consideration of the Education
Committee.
The year 1913-14 has been noteworthy for the large
grant received from the Board of Education for the School
Medical Service. No less a sum than £354 15s. 8d. has been
remitted, being exactly half the cost of the service, including
all clerical work, rent and rates, heating and lighting. I
particularly wish to direct your attention to page 76 of this
Report, where the various items from which grant has been
received are summarised.
In conclusion, I should like to thank the officials of the
Public Health Department and the Hospital for the interest
and zeal they have shown in the work during the past year.
I am, Gentlemen,
Your obedient Servant,
GEOFFREY E. OATES.
M.D., B.S., M.R.C.P. (London), D.P.H.
(Cambridge), Barrister-at-Law.
