On referring to Table VI. appendix, page 115, it will be
seen in reference to this section that the Sanitary Inspectors
during the year made 11,046 visits and inspections, and
served 1,203 orders for the abatement of nuisances so as to
secure the proper sanitary condition of premises in the
District.
Proceedings at Petty Sessional Court.
Section 5.—In 39 cases where the notice for the abatement
of the nuisance was not complied with, the Court
made on the persons liable a summary order for the abatement,
prohibition, or closing, or a combination of such orders
as the circumstances required.
Overcrowding.
26 notices were served upon owners to reduce the number
of persona living in houses or parts of houses which were so
overcrowded as to be injurious or dangerous to the health
of the inmates, whether or not members of the same family.
Underground Dwellings,
26 underground rooms or kitchens found to be illegally
occupied as dwellings were either closed or altered so as
to comply with the Act, or occupied other than as a separate
dwelling.
Bakehouses.
Section 26 of the Public Health Act enacts that Sections
34, 35, and 81 of the Factory and Workshop Act, 1878, and
Sections 15 and 16 of the Factory and Workshop Act
Amendment Act, 1883 (which relates to cleanliness, ventilation,
and other sanitary conditions), shall, as respects every
bakehouse which is a workshop, be enforced by the Sanitary
Authority of the District in which the bakehouse is situate,
