Meteorology.
The remarks of the meteorology of the year are furnished
from the reports made to the Registrar-General by Mr. James
Glaisher, F.R.S., from the Royal Observatory, Greenwich,
and various other stations.
First Quarter.
Temperature.—The mean temperature of the air was
41.4°.
Barometer.—The mean reading of the barometer was
29.814 inches.
Rainfall.—The amount of rain measured was 5.10 inches.
Sunshine.—The amount of bright sunshine recorded was
197.6 hours.
Weather.—-January was very cold at the commencement
of the month, and easterly winds prevailed; the remainder
of the month was remarkably warm.
February was cold, dry and frosty; easterly winds continued.
March.—The winds were northerly and easterly, which
caused the days to be bitterly cold.
Second Quarter.
Temperature.—The mean temperature during the quarter
was 52.8°.
Barometer.—The mean reading was 29.711 inches.
Rainfall.—The amount measured was, at Greenwich, 5.65
inches.
Sunshine.—The amount recorded was 490.6 hours.
Weather.—April was dry with cold easterly winds.
May.—Variable, but generally warm.
June was cold and wet.
