Bedelsford School, Grange Road,, Kingston
This school for physically handicapped children now receives
into the nursery class children from the age of three, which is not
only of great benefit to the children but a tremendous help to their
parents.
Children are provided with transport to and from school and
are accompanied by escorts. All pupils receive a mid-day meal at
school and special arrangements are made for children in need of diets.
It has always been the endeavour to emphasise normality as
far as education is concerned and whenever possible children are
encouraged to be independent and transferred to normal schools. As
the classes are small, it is possible to provide education on
individual lines and instruction is also given in crafts and domestic
science.
Children at the school are examined regularly by a senior
medical officer and all the children are receiving social training and
daily physiotherapy. Pupils with speech defects are treated by the
senior speech therapist at an early age.
In the early summer of 1968, a large number of children
undertook a journey to Austria accompanied by teachers and physiotherapists.
The children stayed in a specially adapted hostel for
physically handicapped children in the Vienna Woods. During their
stay in Austria the children were received by the Lord Mayor of Vienna
and each child was given a beautifully illustrated booklet showing all
the historic sights. This trip proved a great success, both
educationally and socially.
