Tea.
The sample was incorrectly labelled. The container did not
bear the name of the packer or labeller and the address at which
the business was carried on as required by the Labelling of Food
Order 1953. The packer was under a misapprehension and has since
marked the packets with his own name and address.
Low Calorie Orange Drink,
This sample was incorrectly labelled. The word "drink" on
the label was not preceded by the name of the citrus fruit as
required by the Soft Drinks Regulations 1964, The letters and
words Orange Drink were not uniform in size as required by the Soft
Drinks Regulations, 1964 and the manufacturers agreed to amend the
label.
Lemonade Shandy,
This sample was deficient in proof spirit content. It
contained 1.4% proof spirit and in the opinion of the Public
Analyst a shandy should contain not less than 1.5% proof spirit.
The matter was raised with the manufacturers who stated that they
agreed and aimed for 1.7% proof spirit,
Mel, Boracis Borax and Honey B.P.C,
The sample was incorrectly labelled. Borax and honey was
not included in the current edition of the British Pharmaceutical
Codex and the label should indicate the date of the edition in
which the medicine is described. The Public Analyst thought that
a warning ought to be included in the label that special care is
necessary in treating infants, because of the toxic nature of boric
acid allied to its slow rate of excretion.
The manufacturer stated that since publication of B.P.C. 1963
labelling had been in terms similar to those suggested by the Public
Analyst. Borax and honey had not been produced since 1966,
Custard.
The sample was found to be not of the quality expected. It
had separated into a solid mass and a clear liquid. The manufacturer
reported that the formulation broke down in a batch and
this had since been corrected.
