Moveable Dwellings.
Licences under the Caravan Sites and Control of Development
Act, i960 have been issued for
The Riverhill Estate where 36 caravans are permitted,
one caravan in the orchard of a private house and for
three caravans on land at Chalky Lane, Chessington to
be used as Circus winter quarters.
There are nine effective Orders under the Surrey County Council
Act in force in the Borough prohibiting the parking of moveable
dwellings. Little trouble was caused by itinerant caravandwellers
placing their vehicles on open land in the Borough.
Gypsies and Other Travellers.
The Caravan Sites Act, 1968 introduces provisions concerning the
powers of local authorities to provide sites for gypsies and for the
prohibition of unauthorised camping in designated areas. This
particular part of the Act has not been implemented to avoid a fresh
statutory burden being imposed on local authorities at this stage.
River Dwellers.
During the year a survey of all boats moored between Town End
Wharf and Railway Wharf was conducted. Of 60 craft moored 35 were
being used for full time occupation and 14 were tenanted. Ten of
the boats were occupied by families with children and their health
appeared to be good. In one case where there were more than two
children present and the conditions were unsatisfactory the family was
rehoused and the owner undertook not to let to families.
