In the event of any unsatisfactory conditions being
not remedied, a report would be passed to the County
Council, as the Licensing Authority, for their consideration.
It has not been necessary to take any such action in the
case of theatres or cinemas in the Borough. It should be
noted that visits are made during performances as well
as in the morning when cleaning is in progress.
COMMON LODGING HOUSES
There are only two registered common lodging houses
in the Borough, viz :—
Nos. 8 and 10, Vicarage Road (Othen's)—50 beds for
men only.
No. 52, Canbury Passage (Marsh's)—35 beds for men only.
As will be seen, there is no accommodation for married
couples or for children in the registered lodging houses.
The Vicarage Road premises are not of modern design,
but they have the advantage of having been designed for
the reception and housing of lodgers.
Seventeen visits were made td the registered common
lodging houses during 1938, and the arrangements for
disinfection of bedding, etc., when occasion arises, which
have been adopted for several years, have been continued.
CANAL BOATS
The administration of canal boats is now incorporated
in the Public Health Act, 1936, the whole of the Canal
Boat Act, 1884, being repealed, together with the greater
part of the Canal Boat Act, 1877. Most of the old law has
been re-enacted, but there are slight amendments.
There is nothing new to report in connection with
canal boat traffic on the river. Most, if not all, of the
boats are manned by crews with living quarters on shore.
It is exceptional on this part of the river to find a boat
with living accommodation in use.
The Canal Boat Regulations remain in force, but the
annual report on supervision of canal boats is now required
by Section 249 of the Public Health Act, 1936.
