OVERCROWDING.
Twenty-seven new cases of overcrowding were reported
during the year, but of this number, the majority
arose as the result of a review of ' border line' cases
carried out at the beginning of the year. At the date of
the original survey (1935) many cases were noted where
the accommodation was so limited that any further
growth of the family would result in overcrowding within
a few years. These cases were re-visited at the appropriate
date but for one reason or another few new cases
of actual overcrowding were discovered.
This result bears out the view expressed in previous
reports that the overcrowding position would resolve itself
to a considerable extent by action on the part of the people
themselves.
Of the 27 new cases, 6 were found on the Housing
Estate, and 5 of these 6 cases were relieved, bv transferring
the tenants to parlour type dwellings. The remaining
case was under consideration at the end of the
year.
