(i) General Statistics.
Area 1,390 acres
Population 1937 (Registrar General) 39,850
Number of inhabited houses approx 10,000

(ii) Social Conditions.
The Borough has become, to some extent, an industrial
town, the chief businesses including engineering and aeroplane
works.
The unemployment figures remained low so far as the
engineering and allied trades were concerned, but there
was a fairly large increase in unemployment in connection
with building operatives, particularly among those classed
as skilled workers.
