In general the school is pleasing in appearance, and
is entirely free from any feeling of harshness so often
associated with the older type of school building. It is
proposed next spring to plant small trees and shrubs in
the grounds, and in time this will undoubtedly lend an
atmosphere to the building.
Plans of the school were prepared by the Borough
Surveyor of Kingston, and the work was carried out by
Messrs. E. Clarke & Sons, Contractors, of Melton Mowbray.
With the opening of this school, the Junior Mixed
and Infants' Departments of Richmond Road School were
amalgamated and accommodated on the ground floor of
the main building, and the rooms vacated by the Infants
were adapted as a Gymnasium, and two woodwork and
metalwork rooms for the use of Richmond Road Central
School for Boys.
SCHOOL HYGIENE.
Certain external painting and internal decorations
were carried out at Bonner Hill Road, Richmond Road,
and St. Luke's Schools, and asphalting at St. Luke's and
St. Peter's Schools.
The School Clinic was re-decorated, and a doorway
constructed from the waiting room to the garden.
Alterations were carried out at Richmond Road School
on the removal of the Infants' Department, which was
converted into a Gymnasium and two rooms for woodwork
and metalwork.
Towards the end of the year the Education Secretary
made a survey of the desks with the object of urging some
acceleration of replacements. Certain changes at Bonner
Hill Road Central School for Girls gave an opportunity
for providing new furniture for the pupils. This furniture
conformed to the modern practice of providing lower
writing and working surfaces and lowe'r seats.
New desks were purchased for Latchmere Road School
to supplement the existing stock, and also for Richmond
Road Central School for Boys. These new desks were made
to smaller dimensions of up-to-date standards.
