At the end of 1936 there were 13 fried fish shops on
the records. The following five applications were received
during 1936 for permission to commence the trade of fish
frying at the premises set forth, and the action taken is
shown opposite the respective premises.
(1) No. 134, London Road.—Application withdrawn.
(2) No. 5a, Richmond Road.—Not granted.
(3) No. 155, Park Road.—Not granted.
(4) No. 5, Ham Common Parade.—Approved.
(5) No. 210, Cambridge Road.—Approved.
1n the case of No. 4 the permission, although granted,
was not acted upon up to the end of the year.
Two complaints were received during the year in respect
of offensive trades, and thirty—four visits were made to
the various premises.
HOUSE DRA1NAGE
Fifty—one houses were completely redrained during
1936 and the drains of 13 other premises were repaired
or amended to a substantial extent.
The examination of drainage systems under the powers
conferred by the Public Health Acts is one of the duties
which is regarded as most important. These executive
duties necessarily absorb a considerable amount of time,
but it will be generally conceded that the labour involved
is well worth while. An isolated defective drain may not
cause much harm, but the cumulative effect of hundreds of
such leaking pipes, polluting the subsoil and sites of houses,
would be very serious.
For va'rious reasons the redrainage of the houses in
Elton Road was not proceeded with during the year.
Before this extensive work is put in hand a new length
of sewer is necessary, and pending this improvement the
common drain at the rear of the premises has been kept
cleared from time to time.
