Six hundred and fifty—nine "preliminary" and 60
verbal notices were served during 1936. 1n 25 instances
this informal action did not bring about the desired result
and it was necessary to serve "statutory" notices.
During the year 1936, 577 enquiries under the Land
Charges Act 1925, 'respecting property in the Borough were
received from the Town Clerk and were replied to. The
corresponding figure for 1935 was 521.
This brief introductory statement serves to summarise
the year's work in general terms only, and does not include
details of action taken under the Housing Acts and other
headings. A very considerable amount of time is devoted
to interviews with burgesses and owners of property, with,
it is hoped, beneficial results. The policy of helpful cooperation
has been continued and, despite the high standard
of sanitary work which it is the constant aim to maintain,
it is pleasing to be able to report that no less than 96.5%
of the work was carried out as the result of "informal"
action without recourse to the statutory powers vested in
the Corporation as the Sanitary Authority, and that in no
case was legal action found necessary. 1t is very doubtful
whether any other town of similar character and size as
Kingston can equal these records, which are the direct
outcome of the policy of many years standing referred to
above.
For convenience of reference the inspections and visits
are set out in the following tabular form:—
