Report of
Chief Sanitary 1nspector
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
1 beg to submit the Annual Report on the work carried
out by your Sanitary 1nspectors during the year 1936, in
connection with the various Statutes and Byelaws relating
to Public Health in force within the Borough. The present
Report is the eighteenth annual statement 1 have had the
honour to present to you.
The year 1936 proved a busy one. The Housing
Act, 1935 required local authorities to carry out a survey
of their district in order to ascertain the extent of overcrowding.
This survey of the town was carried out during
the early months of 1936 and will be commented upon
later in the Report.
The appointment of an additional inspector enabled
more work to be dealt with and the effect is reflected in
the brief summary and details which follow.
The total number of inspections and visits made during
the past year was 9431, as compared with 7460 during the
year 1935.
In the Registe'r of Sanitary Defects, 783 new entries
were made and 725 previous entries were cancelled following
upon compliance with notices served. On December 31st,
1936, 516 separate entries remained on the Register compared
with 458 at the end of 1935. 1ncluded in the 516
entries referred to, 80 were in respect of houses awaiting
demolition etc., 30 in respect of houses in Elton Road
where redrainage is contemplated, and 24 in respect of
houses in Cambridge Grove Road which had been surveyed
under the Housing Acts, and at which works were in
progress at the end of the year. The remaining 382 entries
were in respect of premises upon which sundry sanitary
defects were found.
