Four hundred and eighteen "preliminary" and seventeen
"verbal" notices were served during 1935. In thirty
instances informal action did not bring about the desired
result and it was necessary to serve "statutory" notices.
During the year 1935, 521 enquiries under the Land
Charges Act, 1925, respecting property in the Borough were
received from the Town Clerk and were replied to. The
corresponding figure for 1934 was 620.
The resignation of Mr. G. C. Cockell towards the middle
of the year occurred at an inconvenient time owing to the
holiday season. The decision, early in 1936 to appoint a
third additional inspector will assist the work of the
department considerably.
The avoidance of unnecessary friction with owners of
property and business people is the continued policy of
your inspectors and despite the comparatively large amount
of work carried out it is pleasing to be able to report that
legal action to enforce compliance with notices served
proved unnecessary. When a difference of opinion does
arise, owners are invited to discuss the matter at the
property under consideration either personally or through
a skilled representative. This gesture usually has the
desired effect and a satisfactory settlement is arrived at.
For convenience of reference the inspections and visits
are set out in the following tabular form.
INSPECTIONS AND VISITS.

The following list shows the number of Inspections made in regard to each section of the works, and the total of all inspections.
