Twelve samples of water were taken and were submitted
to the Corporation Analyst, Mr. P. G. Lloyd. In the case
of 11 of the premises, the use of well water was discontinued,
and supplies were laid on from the Metropolitan
Water Board's mains.
In addition to these 11 houses, the use of well water
for drinking purposes was discontinued at 21 other premises
as the result of informal action taken since the records
were last revised. Thus the total number of premises
removed during 1927 from the list of those supplied with
well water was 32. This progress is being steadily maintained,
but until some tenants are satisfied that it is worth
a little extra rent in order to have a reliable water supply,
a few of the existing wells will remain. In these few cases
the analyses have shown that the water is usable, and the
wells cannot be closed.
Private Slaughter Houses.

There are now six private slaughter-houses in the Borough, and the following table is set out in accordance with the request of the Ministry of Health:—

All the premises have been in use during 1927.
The buildings, with one exception, are old. They are,
however, kept in a fairly satisfactory condition, and the
occupiers show willingness to comply with your Council's
requirements.
One thousand seven hundred and one visits were paid
to these premises during the year, as compared with 987
during 1926.
In one slaughter-house the "Cash Captive Bolt"
humane killer has been in general use for stunning pigs and
sows. The pistol has proved quite satisfactory, and much
more expeditious than the previous method of stunning.
