Conclusion. From the investigations it is concluded that
Mrs. D. is the carrier responsible for the outbreak in this
house. It has been ascertained that she assisted in the
serving of food, washing up, etc., and she has also been in
direct contact with all the other members of the family. It
would appear strange that she had not infected them previously,
as she has been living at the house for the last four
years, and it is worth considering whether the carcinoma of
the cervix uteri from which she is suffering has so lowered
her vitality that she has become an infective carrier recently.
She can give me no history of any persons suffering from
typhoid, or any suspicious illness, at her places of residence
during the last thirty years, since she had typhoid fever herself.
Of course, strict disinfection was carried out at these
premises.
ANTERIOR POLIOMYELITIS.
Two cases were notified during the year, the first in a
girl, aged 19 years on November 18th.
The doctor reports that he first saw this girl in August,
when she complained of a limp and twitching of the right
leg. He found that there was some wasting of the right
thigh. Her general condition was good, and there was no
history of any febrile disturbance or other illness. He sent
her up to St. Bartholomew's Hospital, where his diagnosis
was confirmed. He thinks it probable that the attack dated
from about July. He reported subsequently that the girl
made a rapid recovery, though some wasting of the thigh
persisted.
The second case was in a man, aged 35 years, who was
notified on December 16th. The symptoms and signs were
slight, and the probable date of onset of the disease is given
as October. This man was sent to a Specialist in London,
who gives the diagnosis as probably Polio-Encephalitis.
TUBERCULOSIS.
Cases of Tuberculosis notified in the Borough come
under the administrative control of the Surrey County
Council.
Every effort is made to assist the County Medical
Officer and Tuberculosis Officer in their activities in the
area.
No cases have arisen during the year in which any action
became necessary under either the Public Health (Prevention
