Legal Proceedings
Legal proceedings were instituted under Food & Drugs Act, Public Health (Preservation in food)
Regulations, 1925, in one case where minced beef contained preservative. The offender was fined £10.
(F) Hairdressers
There were three new registrations during the year and two cancellations, making a total of 94
on the register.
There bye-laws made by the Corporation under the East Ham Corporation Act, 1957, came into
operation on 1st September, 1958, and much time was spent checking establishments to see that the
requirements of the bye-laws with regard to premises and equipment were fulfilled. Here again, the
'good' establishments conformed readily, but the occupiers of premises below the 'good' category need
a deal of persuasion that all that is asked for is, in fact, necessary.
(G) Caravans
The East Ham Corporation Act prohibits the parking of vans for human occupation on any site
within the Borough without the prior approval of the Local Authority, but this prohibition does not
apply to bona-fide members of the Showmen's Guild and at the end of the travelling season a large
number of caravans and lorries were parked on vacant land on the By-Pass Road. Enforcement notices
under town planning legislation were served by the Town Clerk, to which the principal of the colony
