The following licences were issued to use special designations prescribed in the Milk (Special
Designation) Regulations 1949-54:

1. One hundred and one samples of milk were submitted for chemical analysis i.e. fat content etc.,
Two samples were found to be unsatisfactory as follows:-
No. 8696 Complaint of chalky taste - found to be deficient in milk fat at least 46 per cent.
No. 8841 Mould growth-No b.Coli.
2. Ninety-seven samples of milk were submitted for bacteriological examination during the year.
Three tests were void due to shade temperatures rising above 65 degrees.
A.2848 One sample from Monega Junior School-Complaint of discolouration - Due to Green
Algae - obvious fault in cleansing and Inspection of the bottle.
All other samples satisfactory.
(b) Ice Cream
Fifty samples of ice cream were submitted for bacteriological examination during the year, the
results were as follows:
2 wrapped ice cream-reduction in b.Coli desirable
9 loose ice cream-reduction in b.Coli desirable
1 " " "-contained organisms of excreta origin in small numbers.
1 " " "-contained excessive bacteria.
The grading of the samples was as follows:-
Grade I-36:
Grade II-8;
Grade III-5:
Grade IV-1.
Follow-up samples were taken where the first sample proved to be unsatisfactory.
Twenty premises remained on the register for the manufacture of ice cream and 306 premises
were registered for the sale of ice-cream, including 15 new registrations.
(c) Meat Inspection

Two licensed slaughterhouses in the Borough continued to operate and the following table shows the number of animals killed and examined:-

There were 3,190 lbs of meat certified as being unfit for human consumption, and 2,769 lbs.
condemned at retail butchers' shops making a total of 5,959 lbs.
The number of butchers shops in the town was 85 which includes three continental and four
Kosher butchers.
There were seven Slaughterers licences issued.
(d) Other Foods
There were 111 premises registered for the preparation or manufacture of preserved food, at the
end of the year. These include such premises as sausage manufacturers and fish fryers.
There was one new registration.
