(B) Notices
There were 1,494 preliminary notices served during the year and 1,040 such notices were complied
with. In addition 577 Statutory notices were served and 525 were complied with. The number of complaints
received during the year totalled 2,311.
(C) Rodent Control
The number of complaints received in respect of rat and mouse infestation totalled 362 and 393
premises were inspected in detail. The rodent operative made 1,797 visits.
(D) Disinfection and Disinfestation
460 premises were treated as appropriate in respect of infectious disease, bugs, fleas, flies
and ants, and where circumstances warranted help was given by the department because of beetle infestation.
The steam disinfector was in operation on 96 days for disinfection of clothing and bedding.
800 library books were disinfected before return to the libraries from households where infectious
disease etc., had occurred. similarly all articles returned to the Health Department "loan cupboard"
by ailing or disabled persons were sterilised or disinfected.
(E) Drainage
The number of complaints of choked or defective drains received during the year totalled 589,
as compared with 607 during the previous year. Most of the repair work is carried out by the Corporation
contractors under the direction of the Inspectorate and by agreement with the owners of the
properties concerned.

The sample (F.F.S.189) Meat and Bone meal was unsatisfactory, Phosphate Acid 1.75 per
cent below stated amount.

Seven samples were taken for analysis during the year as follows:

(H) Mosquito Control
The usual spraying of ditches and other areas of stagnant water was carried out, and advice
given to numerous householders regarding the treatment of water containers kept for horticultural
purposes.
(1) Pet Animals Act 1951
There were 19 premises on the register, licensed to keep a pet shop. Inspections were carried
out to ensure that the conditions of licence issued by the Council were observed. No serious complaints
regarding these premises were made.
(J) Smoke Abatement
The Clean Air Act became fully operative on the 1st June, 1958 and much propaganda work was
carried out by the inspectorate at factories, homes and by addressing meetings, as a forerunner to the
implementation of the Act by the establishment of smoke control areas. The North Thames Gas Board
