One thousand one hundred and three shops were visited after closing hours, and 497 visits were made
during holiday closing time.
Though the great majority of shop-keepers are co-operative In the matter of closing hours, It was
necessary to Issue verbal cautions In 92 cases and to write warning letters In 21 Instances.
Legal proceedings
Three summonses were Issued during the year:
1. Contravention of Section 47 (open on Sunday for sale of unauthorised goods) Fine 10/-
2. Contravention of Section 50 (necessary notices not displayed) Fine £3.
3. Contravention of Section 47 (open on Sunday for sale of unauthorised goods)Fine £3.
The following table gives the number of shop assistants employed In the borough:

This shows a decrease of 124 persons employed In shops during the year.
During the year In 81 Instances there was a change of occupier, In 41 cases the occupier and the
trade changed and In 3 Instances the occupier changed the trade.
There were 7 shops registered In respect of Sunday Trading by Members of the Jewish faith and there
were 4 Kosher butchers operating.
Pharmacy & Poisons Act, 1933
Number of persons listed to retail Part II poisons 155 (renewals 151, new applications 8). There
were 159 visits made primarily In connection with storage of poisons.
Explosives Act 1875
Number of premises registered 166. (Renewals 144, new applications 23, cancellations 26).
The Inspector carried out 109 observations In the vicinity of registered premises at the time of sale
of fireworks, as this Is the type of explosive with which the department Is generally concerned, and In
addition 170 visits of Inspection to premises were made with regard to storage of fireworks.
Heating Appliances (Fireguards) Act 1952
During the year 2,637 observations and visits were carried out under the Act.
It was necessary to prosecute one dealer for obstruction of the Inspector In the execution of his
duties. The dealer was conditionally discharged.
Domestic Servants Registry
There Is one person In the borough carrying on the business of a Domestic Servants Registry. Inspection
of the records at the Registry was made to ensure that the placing of persons was carried out In an
orthodox manner.
Minor Excise Licences
There were 66 premises of persons carrying on the businesses of pawnbrokers, refreshment houses,
money lenders and hawkers, and check visits were paid to all of these premises.
