At this stage no arrangements were made for general practitioners to participate in the scheme, and
as and when vaccine was received from the Ministry of Health, all Immunisations were conducted in the
Local Authority's clinics. Immunisation took place In May, June and December only in 1056, and in this
time a total of 510 children in prescribed groups were given a full course of immunisation.
In August 1957, the scheme was extended to cover children born in 1955 and 1956 and in December 1957,
to those born in 1943-1946 Inclusive, to children born in 1957 if they were over six months old, to expectant
mothers, and certain other groups at special risk. The offer of vaccination was made to the parents
of the 1955-56 group by letter as set out above, and to the other groups by general publicity, i.e. posters,
leaflets, press advertisements and personal contact by Health Department staff.
Discussions took place with the Local Medical Committee on arrangements for General Practitioners also
to participate in the scheme of vaccination, and this extension to the scheme in fact started in 1958.
