Comment has already been made in the foreword to this report on the reduction in neo-natal
mortality.
The problem of prematurity remains, with foetal and infant deaths arising therefrom as the hard
oore of the matter to be resolved before substantial further progress is made.
Supervision of the ante-natal period by the Health Visitor and Midwife, guided and assisted by
the Oeneral Practitioner Obstetrician and Local Authority medical staff, will continue, in a Joint
effort to effect the maximum possible saving of infant life.
MATERNAL MORTALITY
There were no deaths from maternal causes in 1950 and one such death in 1957 giving a maternal
mortality rate per 1,000 live and still births of 0.67.
