With the falling birth rate and decline in population of East Ham the Regional
Hospital Board in reviewing the whole of the provisions for hospital confinement in
the area decided that there were sufficient beds for all purposes without the inclusion
of the 20 at Aldersbrook It was decided therefore after consultation with the Council
who had protested vigorously to close the Unit and to offer beds in Forest Gate Hospital
and East Ham Memorial Hospital to East Ham Mothers who sought hospital confinement.
