(C) Rodent Control
Complaints in respect of rat and mice infestation totalled 322 as
compared with 278 in the previous year, but it is not thought that the
increase indicates a worsening of the position, but rather that the public
are eager to avail themselves of the service provided. Practically
all the rat infestations were again found to be due to defective drainage.
The rodent operative made 2,006 visits and it is estimated killed 577
rats. In addition the Inspectors advise in all cases of mice or beetle
infestation.
(D) Dlslnfestation and Disinfection
Work under this heading was carried out at 374 premises during the
year, in respect of infectious diseases, bugs and dirty premises and
chronic beetle infestation. The steam dlsinfector was used on 110 days
for clothing and bedding, and approximately 900 library books used in
houses where infectious disease or other malignant illness had occurred,
were disinfected. In addition all articles returned from the "loan
cupboard" were sterilised or disinfected.
(E) Drainage
Although the public continued to make good use of the drain cleaning
service provided, the number of complaints received showed a marked decrease
(632 - 373). Many of the complaints however lead to the discovery
of defective drains often necessitating prolonged investigation and
testing of the systems. In the vast majority of cases where defects are
discovered and are the responsibility of tow or more owners, the work is
carried out by agreement by the Corporation's contractors and the cost
apportioned between the owners. This ensures a fair Job being carried out
and undoubtedly affects a saving in costs for the owners.
(F) Mosquito Control
Owing to the amount of building that has taken place on lands
previously favourable to mosquito breeding, few complaints were received,
but preventive spraying of ditches was carried out in the early season,
and remedial measures taken later where necessary.
(G) Pet Animals Act. 1951
There were 21 premises on the register at the end of the year. All
complied with the conditions of licence, though in one instance readjustment
of the stock was carried out to prevent nuisances arising.
(H) Fertilisers and Feeding Stuffs Act, 1926
13 samples were taken during the year as follows :
Layers Poultry Mash

Bone Meal (4)
