PARK VIEW THERAPEUTIC CLUB
This Club continues to thrive by the efforts of the club members
supported by Mr. Steadman and the Duly Authorised Officers.
Recommendation for membership still is made by the hospital
psychiatrists, and in general it is felt the men and women who attend
derive a good deal of pleasure from the warm feeling of companionship
which permeates the gatherings, and gradually confidence is built up in
themselves and in their power to face the ordinary day to day contacts with
other members of the community.
The Chairman and other members of the Health Committee and the Mayor
all have visited the Club from time to time and these occasions have always
been warmly appreciated.
The average membership of the Club In 1953 and 1954 was 40.
SECTIONS 28 AND 51.
The plans for the provision of a second occupation centre for mental
defectives remain as detailed on page 54 of the report for 1949.
The Committee had viewed with deep concern the growing difficulties
of coping with the 30 odd defectives of mixed sex and age grouping in the
rather restricted quarters available at the Katherine Road Labour Hall
Occupation Centre.
Representations were made to the landlords of the premises and the
renting of additional accommodation was agreed.
It has now become possible, with the aid of more staff, to accept up
to 50 defectives daily, and in fact since 21st September, 1953, 50 persons
were received dally for training, recreation and supervision.
