SECTION 26 - VACCINATION AND IMMUNISATION
In regard to vaccination against Smallpox, there is evidence that the
vaccinal state of the people in this borough is steadily declining. In
view of the proximity of the docks, a warning must again be given that for
this reason alone the burgesses are subject to higher risk than certain
other sections of the population, and vaccination should be a duty selfimposed
by every thinking man on himself and his family.
Should there be an indication that it would appear to be more desirable
to carry out vaccination of infants in our clinics, and some mothers are
loth to take their babes to the doctor's surgery for this purpose, then in
the best interests of the community this method of enhancing our vaccinal
state will be adopted.
Fortunately, no case of Diphtheria has occured during the year, but
this must not lead to complacency or diminish our efforts to maintain a
high level of immunization against this disease. The danger of Poliomyelitis
arising after the injection Is very small and can be further
minimized by good technique.
