Of the above cases, on 1/1/50, 504 were inmates at Runwell Hospital,
and 16 in other institutions. During the years, 182 were admitted to Runwell
and 6 to other hospitals, 140 were discharged from Runwell and 5 from other
institutions, 34 of the deaths occurred in Runwell and one elsewhere and on
31/12/50 the cases were accommodated as follows 512 Runwell and 16 other
hospitals.
Difficulty is occasionally experienced by our Duly Authorised
Officers in finding a hospital bed for cases of acute mental illness.
It might be argued that with the comparatively short stay in
hospital now made possible by modern methods of therapy, a rapid turnover
of cases should ensure free beds for urgent sufferers. It must be
remembered however that Runwell Hospital now has a greatly increased
"catchment area" and East Ham must pay the price of regionalisation with
philosophic fortitude, for this is an example of altruism that comes out of
the democratic way of life.
