Guardianship.
There are 43 cases under Guardianship, of whom three are
still evacuated to other areas. During the year, one female was
transferred under Varying Order to Institutional Care (death of
guardian) and in one case the Order was discharged and the patient
transferred to Friendly Care, one male died and the application for
guardianship of one case was deferred at the end of the year.
Supervision.
There are 137 mental defectives under statutory supervision
in their own homes in this area. During the year, 3 cases were
transferred to Institutional Care, 9 to Guardianship, 1 to Friendly
Care, 1 to Runwell and one case referred back to the Education
Committee. A fair percentage of the cases are being absorbed into
unskilled employment. All the cases are visited at varying
intervals, and reports filed, helpful advice being given with regard
to their management, training, etc.
Occupation Centre.
The Centre is open for five whole day sessions per week and
there are 29 on the register, with an average daily attendance of
27 pupils of varying ages and both sexes. A hot midday meal is
provided.
The instruction takes the form of all types of handicrafts and
there is a great demand for completed articles. In some instances
materials for homework are issued.
Physical and domestic training is part of the curriculum and
includes the preparation and clearance of tables and other duties
in connection with the meal.
The trainees indulge in outdoor games and simple gardening.
A vehicle conveys most of the pupils to the Centre.
The annual seaside outing was continued as in previous years
and was much appreciated.
In view of the demand for places, the Council propose providing
a second Centre in the south of the Borough.
Licence, Discharge and After-Care.
Out of 5 defectives (1 male and 4 females) granted licence
during the year, 3 were recalled to institutional care and 2 are
working and doing fairly well. Occasional visits are paid to all
cases discharged from orders and still within this area. All
removals are notified to the respective areas.
