The number of still births registered was 61 compared with 64
for the previous year. The rate per 1,000 total (live and still)
births was 21.06, the figure for 1946 being 24.2.

Births.
The number of live births registered was 2,835 as compared
with 2,577 for the year 1946, equivalent to a birth rate of 23.8 per
1,000 of the population—the figure for the previous year—22.69.

Deaths.
The number of deaths was 1,400 as compared with 1,212 for
the year 1946. The death rate was 11.79, that for the previous year
being 10.6. Of the total deaths 701 or 50% died in institutions.
The number of residents who died outside the area and whose
deaths were assigned to the Borough was 664. The number of
deaths of non-residents in the district was 56. The percentage of

Infantile Mortality.
Deaths of infants under one year numbered 85—equivalent to
an infant mortality of 30 per 1,000 live births—similar to that of
last year. The rate for England and Wales was 41.
