Still Births.
The number of still births registered was 64 compared with 51 for
the previous year. The rate per 1,000 total (live and still) births was
24.2, the figure for 1945 being 28.4.
Since 1942 the statistics in relation to still births is shewn below:

Births.
The number of live births registered was 2,577 as compared with
1,742 for the year 1945, equivalent to a birth rate of 22.69 per 1,000
of the population—the figure for the previous year—18.2.

Deaths.
The number of deaths was 1,212 as compared with 1,235 for the
year 1945. The death rate was 10.6, that for the previous year being
12.9. Of the total deaths 620 or 51% died in institutions. The number
of residents who died outside the area and whose deaths were assigned
to the Borough was 590. The number of deaths of non-residents in
the district was 37. The percentage of total deaths in the age groups
was as follows:—

Deaths of infants under one year numbered 79—equivalent to an
infant mortality of 30 per thousand live births—compared with a
