Infectious Diseases.
Zymotic Death Rate.
The deaths from the seven principal zymotic diseases (Smallpox,
Whooping Cough, Measles, Diphtheria, Diarrhoea, Scarlet
Fever, and Enteric Fever) during the year numbered 27. The
death rate was 0.2 per 1,000 population, as compared with a rate
of 0.2 for 1937.
No cases of smallpox were reported during the year under
review.
The following figures shew the vaccinations carried out by the Public Vaccinators from 1/1/38 to 31/12/38:—

Scarlet Fever.
Two hundred and eighty-seven notifications of this disease
were received during 1938, as compared with 387 for the previous
year. No deaths occurred from this cause, and 253 cases or 88.1
per cent. received hospital treatment as against 87.1 per cent. for
the previous year.
Diphtheria.
Notifications for the year totalled 141, a decrease of 8 cases
when compared with 1937. 140 cases were removed to and
treated in hospital, 100 per cent. being the percentage removed
for the previous year. The number of deaths was 10 or a case
mortality of 7.09 per cent.
There is no change in the arrangements for the supplying
of antitoxin to Medical Practitioners as set out in previous years.
