County Borough of East Ham Education Committee
TO THE CHAIRMAN AND MEMBERS OF THE
EDUCATION COMMITTEE.
Mr. Chairman, Ladies and Gentlemen,
I have the honour to present the Annual Report on the School
Medical Department of the County Borough of East Ham, for the
year ending 31st December, 1935.
There were 17,370 children on the School Roll as compared
with 18,022 for the year 1934.
The numbers of routine and special cases of elementary school
children examined totalled 8,914, showing a decrease on the previous
year, which is accounted for by a reduction in the school population.
A complete medical inspection of all the scholars attending
the Secondary Schools has also been carried out.
I am pleased to state that the Manor Park Clinic, whilst
affording greater scope and hygienic conditions for supervision
and treatment at Minor ailment clinics, has also permitted the
administration of ultra-violet light to a much larger number of
children, with beneficial results. Regular sessions have been
instituted for general light baths and for those cases requiring
local treatment, by carbon arc and mercury vapour lamp. (See
Light Clinics).
An inspection was carried out by Dr. Ralph Williams,
Medical Inspector to the Board of Education, with the object of
ascertaining the degree of malnutrition in scholars attending certain
schools in different areas of the Borough. The enquiry elicited
few instances of suspected malnutrition, and each case was found
to be under careful supervision and treatment. The report is submitted
herewith.
I wish to express appreciation of the keen interest and loyal
co-operation of all the members of my Staff.
