sanitary improvements effected at houses as a result of inspections
under the Housing Acts and Public Health Acts are set out in a
previous paragraph.
The number of dwelling houses inspected and recorded under
the Housing Consolidated Regulations was 4,399.
At long last the displacement of families from Clearance Areas
commenced during the year, and at the close of the year three
families out of sixty-five remained. The number of persons actually
rehoused was 126. Dwelling houses demolished number 31,
whilst 25 were made fit formally and 20 informally.
There still remains a number of unfit houses despite the completion
of the programme of clearance, and in the forthcoming
year it is proposed to deal formally with these.
The outstanding problem of housing in East Ham is the
caravan cncampment at Wall End, and again during the forthcoming
year it is proposed to deal with a number of the enclosures
under the new powers contained in the Housing Act, 1935. It is
contemplated that more than 100 additional new houses will be
required to meet the further displacements.
Early in November a report and estimate of cost of the proposed
housing overcrowding survey was presented to the Public
Health Committee. At the close of the year the report was still
under consideration and the survey had not been commenced.
