Again, certain of the children are brought to the Centre by
guides and parents who kindly assist in this respect, but in many
instances the distances are great, and additional journeys would
prove inconvenient and necessitate the provision of meals at the
Centre, or in close proximity.
A small remuneration for completed orders is now offered to
those receiving instruction and in consequence there is a greater
interest and endeavour to finish the articles in good time.
The Exhibition of work and Annual Christmas Party was
attended by the Mayor and Mayoress (Alderman T. W. and Mrs.
Burden), Mrs. Councillor Wilkens, Chairman of the Committee for
the Mentally Defective, and other members of the Council. A great
variety of articles consisting of baskets, trays, rugs, mats, bookshelves,
knitted goods, etc., made by the scholars was for sale.
Much appreciation of the work was expressed by parents and
visitors which resulted in numerous repeat orders.
Miss Bleadon, the Supervisor, and her helpers are largely
responsible for the efficient work of the centre and the increased
attendance.
