Training and Occupation Centre.
The Occupation Centre continues its good work and affords
to both children and adults an opportunity of acquiring some dexterity
in handicrafts which, apart from usefulness, results in
increased general adaptability.
The interest evinced by the older scholars in their work and
the comparatively high standard attained in the making of various
household requisites and other goods, is a matter of great satisfaction
to parents. The number of saleable articles has considerably
increased, and in some instances the demand has exceeded the
supply. Even in those cases in which there is marked lack of
concentration and response to instruction is slow, it is surprising
what improvement will result by personal tuition, care and infinite
patience.
Simple games and drills, the cleaning of teeth and personal
hygiene comprise part of the daily routine of the younger children
and result in better behaviour, more distinct speech and greater
personal control.
The morning session is devoted to boys and the afternoon to
girls and young children. The average attendance of the former
is about 10, whilst that of the girls is usually 20. There has been
little illness of an infectious character and the health of those
attending the Centre has remained satisfactory, which has resulted
in good attendances.
The Committee has carefully considered the suggestion of
providing a whole-day session for both sexes, but with the present
accommodation this is not possible and it is somewhat doubtful
if the satisfactory attendances would be maintained.
