recently, developed a superimposed tuberculous infiltration, and
all our cases of pure pulmonary Asbestosis have, from the
beginning-, been kept under the closest possible scrutiny. We now
consider that the phthisical risk in Asbestosis will probably prove
to equal that in Silicosis. A case of modified Silicosis—Anthracosis—
complicated by Phthisis, was also encountered in a South
Wales Anthracite Collier.
X-Ray Examinations of the Chest.
The number of these examinations have increased by leaps
and bounds, year by year, as the following figures show :—
1928. 1929. 1930. 1931. 1932. 1933.
29 97 302 352 454 533
(The figures for the last 4 years include screenings and films.)
The examination of every new case is regarded as incomplete
without, among other investigations, a very complete radiological
examination.
The correct interpretation of chest X-ray films demands the
most perfect technique, and a poor film is worse than useless.
The greatest possible attention has, therefore, to be paid to
the quality of the radiogram, and subsequent radiograms for purposes
of comparison concerning progress must be taken under
precisely the same conditions. The Clinic has, unfortunately,
through the untimely death of the Director of the Radiological
Department of the Brompton Hospital, lost a never-to-be-forgotten
friend. His courtesy and kindness to us and our patients can never
be appraised.
With the ever-increasing use which is being made of radiology
in the diagnosis and treatment of chest disease, better and more
complete radiological facilities near at hand will be inevitable.
With the advent of the New Clinic the problem becomes even more
acute.
Acute Adolescent Phthisis.
Acute fulminating pulmonary tuberculosis, particularly in young
girls between 15 and 25, has become a very real problem in the
country generally, and this Borough is no exception to the rule.
