Mental Deficiency.
The opening of South Ockendon Colony for Mental Defectives
by the West Ham Corporation as mentioned in the last report has
considerably eased the difficult situation of this Authority in recent
years, in regard to the provision of institutional treatment for
persons coming within this category.
The Mental Defectives admitted to the Colony are mentally
high grade in classification, and the object is to provide adequate
training and instruction in suitable occupations, as well as an
environment consistent with their happiness and physical wellbeing.
Many slight cases are placed with suitable guardians. Low
and medium grade defectives are accommodated at Forest Gate
Hospital.
