Training Centre.
This year has clearly shown, in some cases, surprising results
of the training given to mental defectives who have attended the
Training Centre during the past four years. In their work and
mental capacity they have responded to the teaching and guidance
of their supervisors. By infinite patience, they have been taught
to make fireside stools, clothes horses, book shelves, various kinds
of baskets, trays, rugs, mats, linen cloths, underwear, knitted
goods, etc., and the buyers of these articles have expressed surprise
and satisfaction at the way these goods have been made and
finished by the young men and women in attendance at the Centre.
The good results with the younger children mentioned in my
previous report have been maintained during 1932, and on my
visits to the Centre I have particularly noticed the improvement
in their general behaviour, speech and concentration.
The Annual Christmas Party and Exhibition of Work was
held, the Mayor, the Mayoress and many of the Council being
present, and I am sure the members of the Corporation must have
realised the valuable work that is done at this Centre.
Miss Fooks, the Supervisor, retired on 17th February, 1933,
on her marriage, and undoubtedly the Centre and those attending
will miss her enthusiasm for the work and the patience she
exercised with those under her charge.
