Slaughtering is carried out at all hours of the day up to
late evening and also on Sundays. There is a rota for the
District Inspectors to take extra office hours and Sunday duty
in turn. The Inspector on duty rings up my house at 10.30 a.m.
on Sundays to report and receive any further messages. This
arrangement, which has been in operation for some years,
has been found to work very satisfactorily.
Slaughterhouses.
Following is a list of slaughter-houses in the Borough :—
Manor Way Farm, New Beckton.
319, Green Street.
167, Plashet Grove.
843, Romford Road (not used during 1932).
524, Romford Road.
737, Romford Road.
28, Station Road.
Forest View Road.
Food Supplies.
The food supplies of the Borough are exceedingly good. As
I stated in a former report, probably the fact that East Ham is
within a few miles of the great central Food Markets of London
to some extent accounts for this satisfactory condition.
The standard of living has greatly increased in recent years,
and the demand for a thoroughly good class article has been met
by a great majority of shopkeepers stocking only foodstuffs of
sound and reliable quality.
It is very unusual to receive any complaint as to unsoundness.
In no instance was it necessary to formally condemn any article
of food sold by retail. A few wholesale parcels were condemned
and the purchasers reimbursed on my certificate.
The shops and markets are regularly inspected at least one
evening in the week as well as during the day in the district
Inspectors' routine work.
