The census for England and Wales was taken on the 26th April, 1931, and from the Preliminary Report issued by the Registrar-General in June, 1931, the following figures are abstracted as far as they relate to East Ham :—
Area in Statute Acres (Land & Inland Water). | Population. | Censal Increase or Decrease 1921-1931 (Persons). | ||||||||
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1921 | 1931 | Numbers | Percentage of 1921 Population | |||||||
Persons | Males | Females | Persons | Males | Females | Increase | Decrease | Increase | Decrease | |
3,324 | 143,246 | 69,342 | 73,904 | 142,460 | 69,031 | 73,429 | — | 786 | — | 0.5 |
It is difficult to account for the decrease in the census population.
One would have thought that with the number of new
houses erected since 1921, the population would have tended to
increase rather than decrease. Further comments will be made
on these figures when the Final Report of the 1931 census is issued.
The Registrar-General estimates the population of East Ham
to the middle of 1931 as 142,800, and on this figure the rates in
the report are based.
