Rats and Mice (Destruction) Act, 1919.
The Council entered into a contract with a firm of professional
rat.catchers, who carry out work at the Isolation Hospital, the
Sewage Works and other premises as required. Private houses
which are rat infested are usually cleared by one of the drain.
clearing gang.
It is impossible to state the total number of rats and mice
destroyed as poison is used as well as traps, but the actual numbers
recorded are :—Rats, 1,803 ; and mice, 438.
Cinemas, Music Halls and Dancing Licenses.
A thorough annual inspection of all premises in the Borough
licensed for dancing, singing, music, cinematograph, and stage
plays is made prior to the annual licensing. Frequent evening
visits are also paid to these premises to inspect for any breaches
of the bye.laws. Complaints are sometimes received of overcrowding
which, on investigation, are found to be unjustified.
Most of our cinemas are specially designed to allow for standing
room, and many visitors are of opinion that when these side spaces
are full this constitutes a breach of the regulations, which are
very fairly observed. On no occasion has it been necessary to
summons the licence holder.
