Amusements Music Hall and Theatres.
The places of public amusement have been regularly inspected.
There is a tendency to overcrowd at certain hours and on
particular days, but when attention has been directed to it the
management have usually complied with any request.
Shops Act.
There are 2,587 shops registered in the Borough, comprising:—

The Shops Inspector regularly visited these shops for the
purpose of compiling trade registers and seeing that the provisions
of the Shops Act and Early Closing Orders were being
complied with. During the year some 121 contraventions were
reported, necessitating letters of caution being sent to offenders,
and in 23 instances legal proceedings were instituted—in all cases
penalties were imposed. For details of prosecutions see page 153.
Trade registers are systematically kept. 358 businesses
changed proprietorship during the year.
Explosives Act.
During the year 153 visits were made under the Explosives
Act for the purpose of re-registration. 17 cautions were given for
offences, and in one instance legal proceedings were instituted and
a penalty imposed. See page 154.
